Located at 693 Fifth Avenue in New York City, the new 20,000 square foot flagship store was designed by British architect David Chipperfield, who has worked on other projects for the Roman fashion brand.

The store houses Valentino’s womenswear, menswear and accessories lines across three floors where grey marble coexists with black steel, aluminium and brass. Two other Valentino stores (one in Aspen, Colorado, and the other in Miami’s Design Distric) are scheduled to open this year in the USA, a market that accounts for approximately 25% of the label’s global sales.

Clothing group Arcadia has confirmed today that it is opening a flagship store for its Topshop/Topman brands in New York alongside the creation of a new US head office based in the city. Scheduled to open by the end of the coming summer, the store will be located on the corner of Fifth Avenue with 49th Street in an early 1930s Art Deco building next to the Rockefeller Center.

The 40,000 square-foot store will be Topshop’s second largest retail space in the world after the 90,000 square-foot London flagship on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street. Its inauguration will mark the expansion of Topshop/Topman in the US, with new stores planned to open in San Diego and Washington in 2014, and in Houston and Atlanta in 2015. Globally, Topshop trades from around 500 stores, while Topman trades from about 400, while 15 new stores trading both brands are planned to open over the next year in eight countries, including Russia, Turkey and Vietnam.

According to the guys in the GANT Rugger creative team, the current conceptual focus in menswear is the adaptation of Swedish design to American style in a combination of Scandinavian midsummer bucolicism with Ivy League sportswear and preppiness. As such, their Spring/Summer 2014 collection is all about ‘Stockholm meets New York City’, and they even went as far as coining the acronym STONYC to define the fashion derived from fusing the lifestyles led by men in the two metropolises.

The duality of sartorial inspirations in the GANT Rugger Spring/Summer 2014 collection can be seen in the blended yarns such as cotton/linen for ties and wool/linen in blazers, and is at its most evident in a bomber jacket made from pastel blue suede with contrasting bright orange lining. The collection also reveals a focus on relaxed knitwear (namely jersey sweatshirts) and on experimenting with floral prints (including tonal printed lilies) and textured fabrics (such as reflective printed nylon).

New York-based fashion designed Alexander Wang has unveiled his first freestanding store in Tokyo on 5 October 2013. Located in the city’s Aoyama district, the new store occupies 345 square meters across three floors that make available the entire Alexander Wang men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, the T by Alexander Wang range, accessories and the Objects collection.

The design of the store mirrors the one used in the recently inaugurated Shanghai store and is centred around the idea of a clean, white box punctuated with noble materials such as Italian white Carrara marble, black Nero Marquina marble and polished bronze. To establish a contrast with these heavy materials and provide a feeling of lightness and transparency, hanging glass unites and floating shelves are used throughout the interiors.
Alexander Wang currently operates 5 shop-in-shops in Japan. The opening of the freestanding store in Aoyama brings the number of the brand’s international stores to 16, while the Alexander Wang e-Commerce site ships to more than 50 countries.

Visitors can access the centre from a large plaza leading to two entrances that cut the geometric facade along a diagonal axis. On entering the building, a sculptural pleated interior leads people through the atrium into the main foyer. In addition to a theatre that will provide a regular schedule of activities, the centre also features a restaurant, a media lab, a lecture theatre and an art gallery.

Fashion designer Thom Browne allowed a glimpse of his personal life by opening the doors of his New York City apartment to Architectural Digest. In an article written by Lynn Yaeger with accompanying photographs by Douglas Friedman published in the September 2013 edition of the magazine, Browne described how it took him over a year to find his ideal home in New York once he had decided to move out of his old place on Central Park West. Located in a 1930s building in Greenwich Village, the 800 square-feet one-bedroom apartment was chosen mainly for its 300 square-feet terrace and the views of the city it commands.

As expected of Thom Browne, the interiors of the apartment are marked by an apparent simplicity that, on close inspection, reveals a subtly understated elegance. In addition to his own creations, Browne worked with architectural designer David Biscaye of Biscaye Frères to fill his home with a number of twentieth-century furniture pieces by designers and brands such as Salterini, Jacques Adnet, Dunbar, T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Christofle, Steuben, Baccarat, Paul McCobb, Gio Ponti and Mathieu Matégot.
