Paulino Spectacles: honouring tradition in eyewear manufacturing

Paulino Spectacles is a new brand of eyewear that has had the eyes of the world on Portugal, where it was founded in early 2012. The brainchild of Ramiro Paulino Ferreira, Paulino Spectacles was born out of the desire to continue the heritage and craft shared between three generations of eyewear artisans that started in the 1930s in the small city of Santarém, situated 65 kilometres northeast of Lisbon. The label draws inspiration from the utilitarian design of optical frames that was commonplace between the 1930s and 1970s and from a nostalgic passion for the sunglasses worn by film stars during the 1950s and 1960s.

Every frame model conceived by Paulino Spectacles takes into consideration the need to be adapted and tailored to the characteristics of each face. High-quality Mazzucchelli acetate is used as the initial raw material that is subsequently shaped by the design process. At this stage, the shape of the eyes and how the frame fits on the face are carefully considered not only for aesthetic reasons but mostly to ensure that they are comfortable for the wearer.

Guided by an unfaltering admiration for slow and meticulous manufacturing and the principle that spectacles should be pieces with which we want to live, it is no surprise that Paulino Spectacles have garnered the attention of numerous fashion stylists and publications, leading to worldwide demand. Currently available in stores in Portugal, Spain, France and the UK and with growing interest from many international retailers, there is no doubt that Paulino Spectacles will soon (and very deservedly so) become one of the most revered eyewear brands.
