‘Head On’ Exhibition at London’s Fashion Space Gallery

The Fashion Space Gallery at London College of Fashion is currently hosting ‘Head On’, a compact exhibition that illustrates the dynamics and creative outputs generated by collaborations developed between milliners and fashion designers.

On display is some of the work developed for fashion designers by British milliners Stephen Jones (such as a piece designed for Donna Karan’s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, one of the black fedoras that covered the faces of models at Belgian husband-wife team AF Vandevorst’s Autumn/Winter 2012 runway show, and one of his iconic ‘Pacman Ghost’ hats for Giles Deacon’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection), Noel Stewart (who worked with Roksanda Ilincic in 2011) and Philip Treacy, whose collaboration with Gareth Pugh is represented through a piece produced for the designer’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Also featured is a head piece by Itoyama Design for Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring/Summer 2004 collection, an example of the work produced by Zara Gorman for Fyodor Golan’s Spring/Summer 2013 range, and a design by John Rocha for his own Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

The relationship between hair and millinery is also explored through the work of Tokyo-based milliner and hairstylist Katsuya Kamo (renowned for his paper headwear pieces for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2009 Couture collection) in the form of a piece for Japanese designer Junya Watababe’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, House of Flora’s fake hair wigs from 2010 for Hanna Marshall, and a 2013 piece by Yasemen Hussein (who resorts to copper and metal to depict iconic hairstyles from historic paintings and mythologies, film and photography).

Head On also showcases the work of emerging talent, such as womenswear designer and milliner Paul Stafford (who works with designer Yiqing Yin to show how headwear can be used to alter the silhouette and subvert and play with scale); and London College of Fashion graduate Lara Jensen, whose elaborate and decorative pieces have been bought by clients such as Karl Lagerfeld, Jessie J and Lady Gaga.

Head On is open until 23 March 2013 at the Fashion Space Gallery.
