The US General Services Administration (GSA) has announced that multinational architectural practice SOM was selected to design Los Angeles’ new federal courthouse. Construction of the building (which will occupy a 550,000 square-foot location at First and Broadway) is expected to start in late 2013 with opening to the public scheduled for 2016. The design plays on the notion of layering transparency by offering a glass cube supported above the ground that will house 24 courtrooms, 32 judges’ chambers and 110 parking spots.
