Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo has announced that her label Comme des Garçons will open a New York store. The brand has signed a lease for a new 20,000-square-foot, seven-story retail space at 160 Lexington Avenue at 30th Street. The store (due to open in December 2013) will be located in a grand neo-classical style building from 1909 situated close to Gramercy Park, which was formerly the home of the New York School of Applied Design for Women and, subsequently, New York’s Touro College.
Comme des Garçons’s New York store is expected to follow the conceptual retail model used for London’s Dover Street Market and I.T. Beijing Market Comme des Garçons, and combine the brand’s own lines with other designer brands for women and men.
