We recently came across the men’s knitwear by Danish brand S.N.S. Herning and became immediately seduced by its practical and elegant designs.
S.N.S. Herning was founded in 1931 in Herning, Denmark, by Søren Nielsen Skyt who, while he was a young man, started making a living by selling knitted garments of his own making. In the mid 1920s he became acquainted with a technique of knitting with ‘bobble’ patterns that increased the insulating abilities of garments. Relying on these techniques, he began manufacturing the so-called fisherman sweater, which was intended to protect its wearer from the rough weather at sea, and to be robust enough to withstand the wear and tear caused by hard work.
Since then, all S.N.S. Herning knitwear garments have been uninterruptedly produced in the same factory and following Skyt’s strict rules for the layout of the bobble pattern, the cut, the measurements, and finishing touches. Although some new designs have been introduced over the last 80 years, the colour palette remains timelessly elegant and masculine, with a focus on black, blues, and greys.
