Located in Shanghai’s Jing An Kerry Centre, the new 6,000-foot retail space will be designed by Kors’ in-house team in collaboration with New York-based architectural firm KPF, and it will feature elements inspired by Michael Kors’s signature use of metallics and texture, namely a shimmering two-storey exterior façade, reflective screens and polished stainless steel fixtures, a 30-foot-high mirrored wall etched with MK jacquard patterns, and interiors with accents of zebra skin.

In addition to the ready-to-wear collections and its full range of accessories (including handbags, watches, jewellery and eyewear), the flagship will house two new concepts for the brand: a dedicated men’s accessory section and a women’s shoe salon carrying both the Michael Kors Collection and Michael Michael Kors shoe line.

Guided once again by the passion for travelling and exotic destinations, Kim Jones conceived another strong menswear collection for Louis Vuitton. Presented during Paris men’s fashion week on a runway hand-painted with an aerial photograph of the Atacama Desert, the luxury brand’s Autumn/Winter 2014 collection comprised 42 looks that, even though inspired by Latin-America’s natural landscapes and ancient civilisations, are ultimately very suited to the urbane taste of the Louis Vuitton man.

If the collection incorporates conceptual and physical elements from faraway countries such as rare skins, geological gems, the animal geoglyph motifs from the Nazca Lines, and traditional Peruvian needle-punched horizontal stripes, the results couldn’t be more sophisticated: silhouettes are slim and clean silhouettes, garments are crafted from noble materials, and an array of stylish accessories complements the looks.
Luxurious fabrics are ubiquitous throughout the collection and include mohair and huarizo (an alpaca-llama crossbreed) in suiting; double-faced vicuña in robes; and cashmere (sometimes blended with silk) in evening double-breasted overcoats, reversible coats, blousons and gloves, or in hand-knitted strips that resemble fur. In addition, dégradé silk is used for evening suits worn over micro-checked and striped shirts, while lounge pants, T-shirts and sweatshirts feature artisan crochet stitch detailing; and a range of scarves made from silk twill incorporate subtle patterns such as chevrons, stripes, and herringbone.

As has become expected of Louis Vuitton, opulent and textured furs and leathers abound: shearling panels are used in a reversible zip-up sweater, chinchilla-lined silk is detailed with heat-sealed zippers and seams, and a windbreaker made from python skin is finished with a calf-leather hood. Equally, accessories and footwear incorporate innovatively treated and patterned skins: a Derby city shoe comes in silver-mirrored calfskin, grained nubuck or crocodile; a city ankle boot-hybrid uses glazed calf with a padded nappa ankle; and rubberized leather is used for the trimming of bags, a predominant accessory offered in a comprehensive range that includes holdalls, totes, messengers, trolley bags, duffles, folios and hybrid backpacks.

And confirming the desirable social status that Louis Vuitton commands, the collection comprises more economical objects that stress the brand’s identity in the form of accessories and jewellery pieces: every look in the collection comes with sunglasses with coloured and mirrored lenses; whereas necklaces, rings, and lapel pins inspired by South-American geology incorporate gems and stones such as crystal, quartz, amethyst, ionite, agate and jasper.

Paulino Spectacles is a new brand of eyewear that has had the eyes of the world on Portugal, where it was founded in early 2012. The brainchild of Ramiro Paulino Ferreira, Paulino Spectacles was born out of the desire to continue the heritage and craft shared between three generations of eyewear artisans that started in the 1930s in the small city of Santarém, situated 65 kilometres northeast of Lisbon. The label draws inspiration from the utilitarian design of optical frames that was commonplace between the 1930s and 1970s and from a nostalgic passion for the sunglasses worn by film stars during the 1950s and 1960s.

Every frame model conceived by Paulino Spectacles takes into consideration the need to be adapted and tailored to the characteristics of each face. High-quality Mazzucchelli acetate is used as the initial raw material that is subsequently shaped by the design process. At this stage, the shape of the eyes and how the frame fits on the face are carefully considered not only for aesthetic reasons but mostly to ensure that they are comfortable for the wearer.

Guided by an unfaltering admiration for slow and meticulous manufacturing and the principle that spectacles should be pieces with which we want to live, it is no surprise that Paulino Spectacles have garnered the attention of numerous fashion stylists and publications, leading to worldwide demand. Currently available in stores in Portugal, Spain, France and the UK and with growing interest from many international retailers, there is no doubt that Paulino Spectacles will soon (and very deservedly so) become one of the most revered eyewear brands.

To suggest the influence of Basquiat’s early graffiti art, Spencer opted for fabrics that underwent over and under-dying and bleaching techniques to reach a muted colour palette of faded red, burnt orange and light blue before being used in trousers, shirts and blazers. Other similarly light and playful patterns, such as large madras checks (used in shorts and shirts), discreet florals and horizontal stripes (in shirts and T-shirts) contrasted with starker navy and cobalt hues. Key pieces included unstructured pinstripe blazers, bomber jackets, trench coats, tailored suits and relaxed blazers with corozo buttons, whereas an exclusive range of sunglasses designed by Eye Respect added stylish and colourful touches to the collection.

As sunny days finally seem to be making an appearance in the northern hemisphere, The Style Examiner’s attention has now turned to accessories such as sunglasses. Of the many brands currently out there, Finlay & Co. certainly caught my attention for its stylish wooden frames. Inspired by retro eyewear designs from the 1950s, the collection consists of two styles, the classic-shaped Ledbury and the rounded-frame Bosworth.

Both models are available in rosewood, walnut and ebony from sustainably managed forests, and no two of the brand’s handmade sunglasses are the same as the wood grain and finish of each piece is always unique. All lenses used by Finlay & Co. provide full UVA and UVB protection and all sunglasses come with a lens cloth and a bespoke, foldable case.
