Following the successful implementation of core business strategies in 2014 that included launching a new fragrance, relaunching heritage products, and upgrading its mobile platform, British luxury fashion and accessories brand Burberry is closing the year with a 14% underlying growth revenue and an overall outperformance across its digital channels.

However, the most significant of Burberry’s achievements over the last year was the expansion of its retail network, with some existing stores being refurbished and nine mainline stores opened. Earlier in the year, the brand inaugurated a new flagship store in China (located in Shanghai’s Kerry Centre), and reopened its flagship store in San Francisco (in a four-floor historic townhouse on Post Street). More recently, Burberry reopened an expanded two-floor store in Munich, unveiled its biggest store to date in Japan (occupying four floors of a building in Omotesando, Tokyo), and opened a new flagship store in Los Angeles.

To mark the opening of the Los Angeles store (set on the corner of Rodeo Drive and Dayton Way in Beverly Hills), Burberry’s design director Christopher Bailey unveiled the Burberry Rodeo Drive Walk of Style plaque, which commemorates the contribution the brand has made to the fashion industry and its connection with Los Angeles’ entertainment community.

New York-based fashion designed Alexander Wang has unveiled his first freestanding store in Tokyo on 5 October 2013. Located in the city’s Aoyama district, the new store occupies 345 square meters across three floors that make available the entire Alexander Wang men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, the T by Alexander Wang range, accessories and the Objects collection.

The design of the store mirrors the one used in the recently inaugurated Shanghai store and is centred around the idea of a clean, white box punctuated with noble materials such as Italian white Carrara marble, black Nero Marquina marble and polished bronze. To establish a contrast with these heavy materials and provide a feeling of lightness and transparency, hanging glass unites and floating shelves are used throughout the interiors.
Alexander Wang currently operates 5 shop-in-shops in Japan.

Austrian architecture practice Coop Himmelb(l)au has completed the Dalian International Conference Center in China. Located by the harbour in the city of Dalian (located in the southernmost part of the Liaodong Peninsula in the Liaoning Province), the building features a sweeping, faceted facade and, on the inside, a 1600-seat theatre and concert hall, a primary conference room for up to 2500 delegates (that can be turned into a banqueting hall, an exhibition gallery or extra seating for the concert hall), and six additional conference spaces whose capacity varies between 300 and 600 seats.

Coop Himmelb(l)au won the competition to design the Dalian International Conference Centre in 2008. Construction began later in 2012 and involved the help of shipbuilders, who were brought in to bend the massive steel plates of the outer shell. The building, conceived as a landmark for the developing district outside the densely populated centre, intends to be a major architectural gesture in the burgeoning area, which will include a cruise terminal and cultural complex in the future.
